About the magazine, the tools, enquiring and our lending — in plain English.
About the magazine and tools
What is The Business of Money?
An Australian business magazine on the money side of running a business — cash flow, pricing, margins, hiring, tax time, buying a business and growth — with free tools and a lending team for owners whose plans need funding.
Who writes the articles?
The Business of Money editorial team. We research topics against current official sources such as the ATO, business.gov.au and the Fair Work Ombudsman, and update pages when rules or dates change. Worked examples are illustrative and don't describe real businesses.
Are the tools free, and do they store my figures?
Both the 13-week cash-flow forecaster and the price-rise calculator are free and run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type into them is stored or sent to us.
Is the content financial or tax advice?
No. It's general information to help you understand your options and ask better questions. For decisions that depend on your circumstances — structure, tax, employment — talk to your accountant or adviser.
Enquiring
Does enquiring affect my credit score?
No. There's no credit check when you first enquire. A credit check only comes up if you decide to go ahead with an application.
Will my details be sent to other lenders or brokers?
No. We don't sell, share around or auction enquiries. One team looks at your situation and a real person calls you.
How long does the enquiry take?
About 60 seconds. We ask for the amount, the purpose, your turnover, your state and whether you own property.
Why does accuracy on the form matter so much?
The details you give decide which options fit. Accurate answers mean we can point you to the right structure on the first call rather than going back and forth.
Who will call me, and when?
A lending specialist who has read your enquiry, usually during business hours on the same or next business day. The call may come from a number you don't recognise.
Lending
How much can I borrow?
Unsecured, cash-flow and line-of-credit options for trading businesses are typically from $5,000 to $500,000, sized on turnover and bank statements. Property-secured loans run from $20,000 to $5,000,000 using first mortgages, second mortgages or caveats over residential or commercial property.
Do you publish interest rates?
No. Every facility is priced on the business's circumstances — the amount, term, security, trading history and purpose — so a headline rate would mislead most readers. We explain the total cost once we understand your situation.
Can you help with ATO debt?
Often. ATO debt is considered case by case, and funding to pay the ATO on time can make sense, particularly as ATO interest incurred from 1 July 2025 is no longer tax deductible.
What if I've had credit problems in the past?
Past credit issues are considered case by case. Tell us about them on the form or during the call — being upfront helps us find the right fit.
Can a new business apply?
Yes, although options depend on the situation. Newer businesses with property to offer as security generally have more choice; unsecured facilities usually need some trading history.
What can the money be used for?
Business purposes only — working capital, stock, equipment, hiring, tax bills, buying a business, a second location, bridging a big contract and similar needs.
What documents will I need?
Only once you decide to go ahead. Typically recent business bank statements, ID, ABN or ACN details and, for secured loans, property information. We'll tell you exactly what's needed for your option.
Can funds be paid directly to the ATO or a seller?
Yes, where that suits the purpose — for example, paying a tax debt or settling a business purchase.
Still have a question? The fastest answer usually comes from a real conversation. Start a 60-second enquiry — there's no credit check to ask.
