About The Business of Money

A magazine about the money questions that come before finance — and a lending team for when the answer is capital.

See if you qualify →No credit check to enquire

The Business of Money is written for Australian business owners who want to understand their numbers before they make a big decision. Our columns cover cash flow and debtors, pricing and margins, tax time and EOFY, and growth, hiring and buying a business. Our features go deeper on the questions owners ask us most.

Why a magazine?

Most people don't search for a business loan first. They search for how to price a job, why cash is tight in a busy month, what a first employee really costs or how to get ready for the June quarter BAS. Those questions deserve proper answers — with the arithmetic shown, official sources linked and examples clearly marked as illustrative — whether or not the reader ever needs finance.

When the answer does involve capital, we think it's better to arrive at that conversation understanding your own numbers. It makes for faster, better decisions on both sides of the table.

Who we help

Owners of trading businesses across Australia: tradies and contractors, cafés and retailers, manufacturers and wholesalers, clinics and professional firms, transport operators and online sellers. People buying a business, opening a second site, taking on a big contract or smoothing out a tax bill.

What our lending team does

  • Unsecured, cash-flow and line-of-credit options for trading businesses, typically $5,000 to $500,000, sized on turnover and bank statements.
  • Property-secured business loans from $20,000 to $5,000,000 (first mortgages, second mortgages and caveat loans over residential or commercial property).
  • Past credit issues and ATO debt considered case by case.
  • Business purposes only. We don't publish interest rates, because every facility is priced on the business's own circumstances.

The promises we make

No credit check to enquire

Asking the question costs your credit file nothing. A credit check only comes up if you choose to go ahead with an application.

No spray-and-pray

We don't auction your enquiry to a list of lenders or lead buyers. One team looks at it, so your phone stays quiet.

A real person on your file

Someone who understands business money reads your answers and calls you. Accurate answers mean the right option on the first call.

In practice that means: asking the question is free of credit checks; your enquiry isn't sold, shared around or auctioned to a list of lenders; and the person who calls you has read what you wrote. We ask one thing in return — fill in the form accurately. It's the difference between a useful first call and a wasted one.

How we write

Articles are produced by The Business of Money editorial team. We research each topic against current official sources such as the ATO, business.gov.au and the Fair Work Ombudsman, and we update pieces when rules or dates change. Our worked examples are illustrative and don't describe real businesses. Where a decision depends on your circumstances, we say so and suggest who to ask.

The Business of Money is operated by the operators of The Business of Money.
